The cold winter in Northern Vietnam with consecutive cold spells makes young children easily susceptible to flu, cough, sore throat, runny nose… Seeing a child coughing all day long, surely any mother would feel extremely heartbroken.

However, parents should not rush to give their children antibiotics in the hope of a quick recovery, as that can be very harmful to their health later on. Mothers should persevere with very effective folk remedies from a common spice: onion.

Onions contain a number of phytoncides such as allicin, which have strong antibacterial properties, and work to kill infectious bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella.

In the West, onions are not only a delicious dish but also a long-standing cough remedy, popularly used, both effective and very benign.

Americans have used onions to treat flu and colds for centuries. Even the World Health Organization has recognized onions as helping to reduce coughs, congestion, bronchitis, and respiratory inflammation.

According to Traditional Medicine of Tue Tinh: “Onions have a hot property, when used internally they have a general stimulating, antiseptic and antibacterial effect, causing secretion, treating coughs, facilitating digestion, and treating worms. Used externally to soothe and reduce swelling, antiseptic, analgesic, and repel mosquitoes.”

Dr. Bui Hong Minh (Permanent Vice President of the Oriental Medicine Association, Ba Dinh, Hanoi) said that onion is indeed a medicine in Oriental medicine. Eating onions helps reduce fat, stabilize cholesterol, cure ear infections, reduce chest pain, cure coughs, colds…

    + Implementation:

Peel the onion, wash it, slice it thinly into a bowl and steam it with rice or steam it in a double boiler for 30 minutes.

When the onion has cooled down a bit, add honey, mix well and strain the juice to drink. It is more effective if you use the pulp as well.

Method 2: Combine onion and rock sugar

    + Ingredients: 1/2 onion, 20g rock sugar.
