This remedy helps cure coughs and runny noses in young children using ginger, as shared by Dr. Pham Nhu Ta (Former Lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, currently Head of the Traditional Medicine Subcommittee of the Ho Chi Minh City Oriental Medicine Association). The method is extremely simple as follows:
Ingredients:
- Mature ginger: 50g
- Rock salt: 20g
- Water: 1 liter
- Pot, basin…
Instructions:
- Choose mature ginger, peel and wash thoroughly under running water.
- Crush the ginger, boil it with 1 liter of water and rock salt.
- When the water boils, reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes to extract the ginger essence. Then turn off the heat and let it cool to about 40 degrees Celsius before using.
How to use:
Before going to bed, pour the warm ginger water into a basin to soak the baby’s feet. While soaking, massage the soles of the baby’s feet. If you know the Yongquan acupuncture point, pressing it will have a faster effect. However, if you don’t know it, simply massaging the baby’s feet is sufficient.
Massage technique: Use your thumb to press on the top of the baby’s foot, and gently squeeze the sole of the foot with the other fingers, running from the heel to near the toes. You can also rub ginger on the soles of the baby’s feet.
When the water cools down, remove the baby’s feet and place them on a clean towel. Dry the baby’s feet and gently massage with eucalyptus oil or cajuput oil to allow the oil to absorb and spread to the acupuncture points on the baby’s feet. Then put socks on the baby before they go to sleep.
Persistently use it once a day for 3 consecutive days, and the baby’s cough and runny nose symptoms will completely disappear.
How to bathe with ginger water:
If the child is sick, you can bathe them every day.
To prevent illness, you can bathe them 2-3 times a week in the summer or every day in the winter. Bathing with ginger helps children keep their lungs warm and their bodies warm, which is very good for disease prevention.
Method 1: Crush the ginger thoroughly, put it in a bowl of boiling water, leave for about 15 minutes, then mix both the ginger and ginger water into a basin of warm water to bathe the child. Choose a deep bathing basin, submerge the child almost up to their chest, and bathe them comfortably in a draft-free room.
On days that are too cold, or if the child has a cold but is also feverish, mothers can apply the following method: Boil a pot of water with ginger and lemongrass stalks. Boil for about 10 minutes, then put the pot of water in a large blanket. Hug the child, sit inside, and let the heat spread until it’s really warm. Then undress the child, remember to slightly open a corner of the blanket for air circulation. Keep them wrapped like this for about 5-7 minutes, then wipe the child’s body. This helps relieve colds and prevent illness without even needing a bath.
Method 2: Should be applied to children with persistent coughs
Boil ginger water, choose 200 grams of mature ginger, crush the ginger with 2-3 liters of water, then mix with cold water until lukewarm and bathe the child. Have the child soak their whole body (have the child lie down or hold their back to soak up to their chest) in the water for 5-7 minutes.
This will be very effective in relieving colds and treating persistent coughs.
NOTE:
- While soaking the child, if the water cools down, add a little more hot water.
- Mothers should pay attention to whether the baby’s skin is irritated by the ginger to reduce the amount of ginger accordingly.
