Preparing baby essentials is a hard task for mothers, even though their bellies are “huge.” However, every mother is happy and excited to do this. They shop for baby items with a sense of joy; purchasing tiny items for their beloved child is an incomparable joy. These are the items for their beloved child, the soon-to-be-born child they always love and look forward to.
Planning Baby Purchases
Those who have given birth and raised a child know that there are countless items to buy for a newborn, not just a few. Therefore, mothers need to list and detail a list of necessary items to avoid buying too little or too much, saving time and effort.
Mothers should carefully research and learn from other mothers’ experiences in buying baby items, then choose the necessary and suitable things for their circumstances. Below is a list of essential newborn items for boys and girls for mothers to refer to and then adapt to their needs and financial situation.
List of Newborn Essentials
Newborn Clothes
– Newborn Shirts: 5-6 soft shirts to avoid discomfort for the baby. Choose buttoned shirts to prevent the baby’s belly from getting cold (even in summer, it needs to be covered) because the newborn is not yet accustomed to the outside environment.
– Newborn Pants: 5-10 pairs with elastic waistbands that have good stretch.
– Newborn Bodysuits: Buy about 5 sets, both long-sleeved and short-sleeved.
– Warm Clothes, Sweaters: If the baby is born in winter, buy warm clothes; if in summer, it’s not necessary.
– Diaper Covers: 5 for newborns, and you can buy 10 more for the baby at 3 months old when it’s less convenient to go shopping.
– Swaddles: 2 hooded swaddles.
Baby Wipes, Mittens, Booties
– Bath Towels: 2 hooded bath towels for the baby’s head. They can be used to dry the baby after bathing, cover the baby when it’s not too cold, or wrap the baby when going out.
– Gauze Towels, Baby Wipes: 20-30 soft, 3 or 4-layer wipes.
– Cloth Diapers: 10 soft cotton cloth diapers, used during the first month.
– Newborn Hats: 2 round hats with minimal patterns to avoid scratching the baby’s head.
– Mittens, Booties: About 5 pairs of each, made of soft cotton fabric. Choose tie-on types, avoid elastic ones that can leave marks on the baby’s hands and feet.
– About 3 Cloth Bibs: To keep the baby’s neck warm and prevent clothes from getting dirty during feeding. It’s recommended to buy snap-on bibs.
– Head Pillow and Positioning Pillow: One of each with mung bean filling.
– Newborn Mattress Pads: Buy 2 to 5 mattress pads for the baby so that if they wet the bed, it won’t soak through to the mattress or sheets.
– Meconium Pads: 1 pack for the first few days when the baby passes meconium.
– Small Rush Mat: 1 if the baby is born in summer, not necessary in winter.
– Newborn Diaper Liners: 1 pack to use with diaper covers in the beginning.
– Newborn or Size S Diapers: 1 pack. After about half a month to a month, you can use diapers for the baby, which is more convenient than liners.
Note:
“From the experience of many mothers, you shouldn’t buy too many newborn clothes during this time because babies grow very quickly, and buying too much will be wasteful. About 3-4 sets of each item are enough. If you give birth during the rainy season, buy more in case clothes don’t dry in time. See more: winter baby essentials“.
Milk and Bottle Accessories
– Backup Milk: You can buy Meiji or Glico ready-to-feed milk in cans or small boxes, which is more convenient and economical.
– Baby Bottles: 1-2 bottles. Buy wide-necked bottles with anti-colic valves to prevent bloating in newborns. Choose 150ml capacity bottles (if you have small nipples, buy regular-necked bottles).
– Sterilizer: A steam sterilizer is very convenient for sterilizing and drying baby bottles and nipples (if you want to save money, you don’t need to buy this and can use the traditional method of boiling in a pot of water).
– Bottle Warmer: Helps mothers save time warming milk for their babies. However, if you don’t want to spend extra, you don’t need to buy this. Just soak the bottle in 40-degree warm water. It takes a little longer.
– Bottle Brush and Bottle Wash: To clean baby bottles.
Other Newborn Essentials
– Several Bottles of Saline Solution: For newborns, used for cleaning the baby’s eyes (buy at the pharmacy).
– Sterile Gauze: For the baby’s umbilical cord and tongue cleaning.
– 1 Pack of Cotton Swabs: For cleaning the baby’s ears and nose if needed.
– 1 Box of Diaper Rash Cream: To prevent and treat diaper rash.
– Baby Shampoo and Body Wash: 1 bottle, specifically for newborns.
– Baby Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softener
– Nasal Aspirator for Newborns, Baby Nail Clippers
– Thermometer: Forehead or ear thermometer to monitor the baby’s health. If you can’t afford it, buy an underarm thermometer.
– Baby Bathtub: Buy a long bathtub so the baby can lie down comfortably and it doesn’t get crowded.
– 1 Plastic Basket with Lid: To store and prepare things for the hospital.
– Mosquito Net for Newborns: To protect the baby from wind and mosquitoes while sleeping without the mother beside them.
– Plastic Wardrobe: To store the baby’s clothes separately.
– Baby Stroller: Can be purchased later.
Essentials for Mothers During Childbirth
The mother’s essentials are also very important. Don’t be so busy preparing baby items that you forget your own. Here are the must-have items for mothers:
– About 2 Sets of Postpartum Clothes: Long-sleeved clothes for wearing at home. Buy nursing clothes, which are designed for breastfeeding mothers. They are convenient and don’t require lifting your shirt to breastfeed, so breastfeeding mothers don’t have to be shy when breastfeeding in public.
– Socks: 2-3 pairs to wear after giving birth.
– Adult Diapers: 2-3 for the first few days postpartum.
– Maternity Pads: 1 pack to use during lochia.
– Disposable Underwear: 5 pieces.
– Nursing Pads: 1 box to use when going out.
– Breast Pump: You can buy this before or after giving birth. There are many different types of breast pumps, from a few hundred thousand to several million VND. Choose one that suits your budget.
