Young children often suffer from runny noses and nasal congestion, making it difficult for them to breathe, leading to discomfort, fussiness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and poor sleep. Therefore, parents need to take prompt measures to help children breathe easier. With its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, chive leaves have been used as a folk remedy to effectively treat coughs and runny noses.

According to Oriental medicine, chives have a warm property, a slightly sour and pungent taste, and are non-toxic. Moreover, chives contain many valuable antibiotics, especially effective in treating respiratory and intestinal diseases in children. Modern medicine has also proven the benefits of chives, such as supporting kidney function, expectorating phlegm, detoxifying, and effectively treating coughs, colds, and runny noses in children.

When children have a cough and runny nose, mothers can apply the 3 folk remedies from chives below. Note that when children start showing signs of a cough and runny nose, mothers should apply these remedies immediately for better effectiveness.

Method 1. Steamed Chives with Fresh Ginger

    – Ingredients: 5-6 chive leaves, 1 slice of fresh ginger, rock sugar.

    – Preparation: Wash about 5-6 chive leaves, cut them into small pieces along with a small slice of ginger, add a little rock sugar, and steam until cooked.

    – Usage: Give young children 2-3 ml per dose, twice a day for 4-5 consecutive days.

This remedy is very effective in treating colds and coughs.

Method 2. Steamed Chives with Honey for Children Over 1 Year Old

    – Ingredients: 5-6 fresh chive leaves, half a teaspoon of honey.

    – Preparation: Wash the chives and cut them into small pieces about 2 knuckles long, place them in a bowl. Add honey to the bowl and steam for about 20-30 minutes until the chives are tender.

    – Usage: Use 2-3 times a day, 1-2 teaspoons of this mixture per dose, taken warm to enhance its effectiveness. Use continuously for about 5-6 days until the cough and runny nose are completely gone.

Note: This remedy is only applicable to children over 1 year old. For children under 1 year old, mothers can replace honey with rock sugar and follow the same method.

Method 3. Steamed Chives with Lemon and Fresh Turmeric

    – Ingredients: 5-6 fresh chive leaves, 1 slice of fresh turmeric, 1 thin slice of fresh lemon.

    – Preparation: Wash and crush the fresh turmeric. Wash and chop the chives. Put all 3 ingredients in a bowl, add a little filtered water, and steam in a pot for about 15 minutes.

    – Usage: Give children about 1 teaspoon of the mixture, 3 times a day, 15 minutes after meals.

Note: When children have a runny nose, combine these folk remedies with nasal suction and cleaning to clear nasal discharge for maximum effectiveness. For young children, mothers can instill saline solution and then suction their noses. For older children, a nasal rinse bottle like Nasopure can be used to clean the nose to prevent and support the treatment of runny nose, nasal congestion, sinusitis, and rhinitis.

Above are 3 extremely effective remedies for runny nose and cough from chives. Mothers, try applying them to your children. Wishing your children good health.
